Epoxy Injection vs. Polyurethane Injection — Which One Do You Need?

When it comes to concrete crack repair, choosing between epoxy injection and polyurethane foam injection depends largely on the purpose of the repair: structural strength or waterproofing.


Epoxy crack injection is a rigid, high-strength resin that bonds permanently with concrete. Because it doesn't flex, epoxy is best used on non-moving, structural cracks — the kind found in load-bearing walls, foundation footings, or columns. Once cured, epoxy actually restores the concrete's original compressive strength, effectively making the crack as strong as the surrounding material. However, epoxy is not ideal for cracks that are actively leaking water, since moisture can interfere with proper curing.


Polyurethane crack injection, by contrast, is a flexible, expanding foam that reacts with water to form a watertight seal. It's the preferred choice for stopping active leaks in basement walls, foundation cracks, and below-grade structures. Because polyurethane remains somewhat flexible after curing, it can accommodate minor movement in the concrete, making it a great option for cracks caused by settling or seasonal expansion and contraction.


So how do you decide? If your main concern is a structural crack affecting the integrity of a wall or slab, epoxy injection is the stronger long-term solution. If your priority is stopping water infiltration quickly — especially in a wet or actively leaking crack — polyurethane foam injection is usually more effective.


In many cases, a professional contractor will assess the crack's width, depth, moisture level, and location before recommending a specific injection resin. Some repairs even combine both materials for maximum durability and waterproofing performance.


Either way, both methods are far less invasive and expensive than excavation or full wall replacement, making crack injection a smart first step in concrete repair.
